BS Degree in Sociology: High School Social Science Teaching Concentration
Checksheet
This major is designed for students who want to teach the social sciences (sociology, history, geography, anthropology, political science, and economics) in high school.
A concentration in Sociology means that this is the prime area they would like to teach.
A Social Science, B.S. Teaching student must, in addition to possessing a good foundation of general knowledge and oral/written communication skills, be interested in people. Teaching involves face-to-face contact with students, parents and administrators which makes oral communication, listening and situation evaluation important. Careers in this area often include written work in the form of class notes, worksheets and exams. Students in this concentration should also have a clear set of ethics, since they are dealing with the lives of children.
These skills include the ability to write and speak well, the ability to mentor, evaluate and guide students. The ability to use computers would also be helpful.
Students in this concentration are well-prepared to pursue graduate education in programs not only related to education, but in general sociology, or other social sciences, as well. ASU offers an M.A. in sociology, as well as graduate degrees through the Department of Leadership and Higher Education.
