NC Methamphetamine Initiative and ASU Partnership for Methamphetamine Treatment Program Development and Evaluation
Appalachian State University 's Social Work Program has been and continues to be involved in the development of the local methamphetamine family treatment initiative and program evaluation. The local Watauga/Ashe project, aka Family Solutions , is viewed across the state and nation as a model for the treatment of families affected by methamphetamine abuse. The North Carolina Division of Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities/Substance Abuse Services Division and Appalachian's Social Work Program along with other disciplines have formed a partnership to expand this involvement and conduct program evaluations of each of the area programs' treatment initiatives. Interdisciplinary faculty and staff of the Social Work Program, Human Development and Professional Counseling, the Department of Psychology, and the newly established Institute for Health and Human Services are involved in this project. This project provides varied opportunities for social work students. These opportunities include:
- Exposure to cutting edge methamphetamine family treatment in the classroom
- Exposure to real world evaluation of the methamphetamine treatment in the classroom
- Participation for selected students in research assistantships related to the evaluation
- Participation for selected students in internships related the treatment initiative.
