North Carolina's Community Based Programs' Database Management Project
Since FY 2000-2001, selected faculty and staff with Appalachian State University's Social Work Program have contracted with North Carolina's Division of Social Services within the NC Department of Health and Human Services to implement a web-based database and evaluation protocol for use by family support and family resource center providers located throughout the state, and by state and regional Division staff. In addition, the evaluation team with Appalachian's Social Work Program also are developing web-based information systems for the Division's Intensive Family Preservation Services Program, the Family Preservation Services Program, and the Reunification Program. This innovative project has resulted in improved evaluation of services to recipient families of family resource centers and family support programs. The data collected also has allowed the Division to report accurately and effectively on these services to legislators of North Carolina 's General Assembly. Appalachian's social work students receive the following benefits:
- Exposure for all students to a state-of-the art family support evaluation and MIS in social work research courses
- Exposure for all students to family support/prevention intervention activities in social work courses
- Participation for some social work students as research assistants on the project
