Admissions Requirements, Master of Social Work
Prerequisite: A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
Applicants also must meet these basic criteria for consideration:
- a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.5 with a 3.0 in the last 60 hours;
- (Undergrad GPA X 400) + GRE-Verbal + (GRE-Quantitative OR GRE-analytical) > 2000; and
- an undergraduate liberal arts background, including courses in English, biology, social sciences, humanities, and mathematics or statistics.
In sum, applicants for Appalachian’s MSW Program must provide the following for admission:
- Official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended;
- A Graduate School Application Form and fee* (*only applicants for the on-campus, full-time MSW program may submit their application electronically directly to the Graduate School);
- A Graduate Record Examination (*GRE) score (* The GRE should be completed within the past 5 years for official results to be sent to Appalachian State University. Please be aware that official results take approximately 5-6 weeks to be sent. Thus, please send an unofficial copy of the GRE score with the application package.

- **Three Letters of Reference (**Referents who can address your academic undergraduate performance, and/or who can address your work or volunteer human services experience are best. Please avoid using family or friends as referents);
- A Personal Statement; and
- A Resume
The social work faculty may offer early admission, before the admission deadline, to qualified applicants.

Admissions will be competitive for both MSW Programs at Appalachian State University, and applications will be evaluated based on the entire application “package” previously detailed.
Deadlines: March 15, 2008 (for full-time MSW Program on Boone campus, and part-time in Hickory, scheduled to begin August 2008).
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
