Department of Sociology and Social Work Policy on Office Hours
Every fulltime faculty member is required to be available seven (7) hours per week during the
regular academic year to consult with students. Requirements for part time faculty will be prorated
according to the number of hours taught. Each department will maintain an office hours policy
that establishes standards regarding a mix among formal office hours, meetings in other
locations, and electronic communications appropriate for faculty members and curricula in that
department. A schedule indicating the times available for formal office hours, meetings in other
locations, and electronic communications must be posted on the faculty member’s office door,
listed on course syllabi, and provided to the departmental office at the beginning of each
semester. Electronic communication addresses, URLs, and/or phone numbers must be listed on
course syllabi and provided to the faculty member’s departmental office. During the term of a
summer session in which a faculty member teaches, office hour expectations are half of those
during the regular academic year.

The purpose of this policy is to establish a minimum number of office hours and the form
those office hours will take. Nothing in this policy is intended to conflict with the Office
Hours Policy adopted by Board of Trustees of Appalachian State University on March
31, 2006, the full text of which appears below.
It is the Policy of the Department of Sociology and Social Work that each full-time
faculty member will maintain office hours for the purpose of consulting with students at
least seven hours per week during the regular academic year During the term of a
summer session in which a faculty member teaches, office hours will be at least half
those of the regular academic year. For the purposes of meeting the requirements of the
Office Hours Policy adopted by the Board of Trustees of Appalachian State University on
March 31, 2006, the full text of which appears below, it is the policy of the Department
of Sociology and Social Work that full-time faculty will be available at least five hours a
week for formal office hours involving face-to-face consultation with students. The
remaining two hours may, at the discretion of the individual faculty member, be devoted
to formal office hours, meetings in other locations, and/or electronic communications.
Each semester, office hours and their form and location will be posted on the individual
faculty member’s door, included in all syllabi for courses taught by the faculty member,
and filed in the departmental office. In the case of faculty members with off-campus
teaching responsibilities, the mix of formal, electronic, and other location office hours
will reflect a reasonable effort to maintain availability to all students enrolled in the
faculty member’s classes and will total a minimum of seven hours per week during the
regular academic year. In each case involving off-campus instruction, office hours and
their form and location will be posted on the faculty member’s office door, included in
syllabi, and filed in the departmental office. Part-time faculty members will maintain
office hours on a prorated basis reflecting the number of hours taught.
